No.4 Studio is pleased to present 'New Paintings', a solo exhibition by Dan Flanagan, his second with the gallery.

Created with an economy of line and color, Flanagan’s paintings oscillate between minimal abstraction and sexually-charged illustration; lines and shapes can be seen as body contours and bodily organs just as easily as they can be appreciated for their formal qualities.

In this current exhibition, his work moves towards greater material diversity—incorporating spray paint, crayon, and marker in addition to acrylic paint—and takes a more gestural approach to mark-making. Palimpsests of previous paintings poke through the white canvas, as in Nude, which features a ghostly after-image haunting the body depicted on its surface. Other works are less minimal: The abstracted figure in Torso is camouflaged in a swirling sea of colorful scribbles and marks.

Dan Flanagan (b. 1983, Madison, WI) studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the New York Studio School. His work has been exhibited locally at venues including Outlet Gallery, Victori + Mo, and Fisher-Parrish Gallery; at LAMOCA and Tin Flats in Los Angeles, and abroad at Art Toronto and the Museum Dan Tanah Liat, Bantul, in Indonesia.
Dan Flanagan’s exhibition of new paintings opens to the public on Friday, September 9th, with a reception for the artist from 7-10pm.

On view through September 30, 2018.
